INDIAN POLITICS & IMPORTANT NEWS

Six issues that shamed India the most

In India, the corruption story is always relevant, even more so with Anna Hazare's ongoing crusade. But corruption isn't the only plague coursing through India's veins. Here is a list of six things/issues that we Indians should be shameful about

Six issues that shamed India the most

1. Corruption: As old as the country

India's date with corruption seems to be as old as the country itself. Starting with the British bribing the Maharajas to gain control of the unconquered lands, it is a long trait that has been a boon and a bane to many. You must be thinking how is it a boon? I'll come to that later.

Licence Raj: Corruption Raj since Independence, India's economy has been driven by socialist-inspired policies for practically three to four decades. When Indira Gandhi came to power in 1966, she went on a socialist spree --- Nationalising banks, Garibi hatao campaign and Licence Raj. Licence Raj became synonymous with corruption as red tape was inevitable while the companies scouted for licences to set up businesses in India.
Imagine this: Up to 80 government agencies had to be satisfied before private companies could set up shop, and if they did manage to do it, the government would regulate the production. Probably that is not what Jawaharlal Nehru, the architect of the system of Licence Raj, had in mind.

Spectrum Raja: Billions vanish into air

That licence raj is still prevailing today, albeit in a different manner, thanks to Spectrum Raja, is disturbing. A Raja, who is the Union Minister for Telecommunications, seems to have literally thrown spectrum to the winds. There were major irregularities in allotting wireless radio spectrum and licences by the telecom ministry to nine private telcos in 2007 (second generation).

The Rs 60,000 crore-scam began when the government allocated scarce 2G spectrum at throwaway prices that too to a string of companies without any experience in the telecom sector. The allegation is that the government gave away scarce spectrum to nine companies, clubbed with licences, on a first-come-first-serve basis, rather than through an auction process. That is, an operator got start-up spectrum by paying pan-India licence fee of Rs 1,650 crore. This price was not taken on the basis of the 2007 market value but on the basis of an auction held in 2001.

Also, many new players roped in foreign investors soon after acquiring the licences, thereby making a neat sum. The value of the licence and spectrum in 2007 could not be the same as in 2001 as the telecom market has grown phenomenally during this period. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh refused to accept the allegations surrounding Spectrum Raja.

Commonwealth Games: Muck yet to stop flying

Imagine buying a 100 litre fridge for Rs 42,202 (which can be bought for a mere Rs 14,000-15,000), a toilet tissue paper roll for Rs 4,132 (Original price: Rs 30-40) and a 2 tonne AC for Rs 1,87,957 and wait..... an umbrella for Rs 6,000 and more!

This is probably a Guinness record and the neatest way in which Suresh Kalmadi, the chairman of the Games Organising Committee, could make pots of money... after all price is a matter of perception. The rot starts right at the top. The probe of Comptroller Auditor General of India (CAG) revealed that undue favour had been showed to London-based Fast Track Sales solely on the recommendation of Commonwealth Games Federation Mike Fennell and Chairman Suresh Kalmadi.

Jubilee Sports Technology, a relatively unknown company, had bagged many Games contracts and was a key supplier. It appears as if the company's headquarters and other shareholders have simply vanished into thin air as most of the addresses have turned out to be a fake. There too much more muck...

Among the other famous scams that have rocked India for several years are the Bofors scandal (which is yet to see the light of the day), fodder scam and Mayawati's Taj Corridor Scam. A quick look at history to find out why they are still rocking the Parliament.

Bofors:The Indian government signed a $1.4 billion contract with Swedish arms company AB Bofors on March 24, 1986, for the supply of over 400 155mm howitzers. It is alleged that Bofors paid kickbacks to top Indian politicians and key defence officials to secure the deal. Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, who was close to Rajiv Gandhi, was the middle man.

Former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's name figured in the first CBI chargesheet in the case as "an accused not sent for trial" as he was killed in 1991. The Hinduja brothers also have been charged in this case --- with cheating, criminal conspiracy and corruption. Both were later cleared of any involvement by the Delhi High Court. The latest --- CBI has applied for a closure of the case against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi.

Taj Corridor Scam: In 2002-03, the then chief minister of Uttar Pradesh decided to upgrade tourist facilities near the Taj Mahal. The BJP government at the Centre gave her the environmental clearance for the project, but later backed out. It is alleged that Mayawati embezzled money set aside for the Rs 175-crore project. The case is still under investigation by the CBI.

Fodder Scam: The Rs 950-crore scam kept Lalu Prasad Yadav in the limelight long enough. It involved the alleged embezzlement of about Rs 950 crore from the treasury of Bihar. This was done over many years and through various officials who even fabricated vast herds of fictitious livestock for which fodder, medicines and animal husbandry equipment were supposedly procured.

Now back to why it is a boon for people like us. It is because our officials are corrupt that we know that a bribe here and there will get our work done, without breaking our heads too much about being law-abiding citizens. We evade taxes, pay off cops for traffic violations, register properties under false names, play for the country even if we are not eligible all because corruption has become so intrinsic in our system.

2. Public Etiquette and hygiene

We are habitual offenders when it comes to public hygiene. Go to any part of India, be it the cosmopolitan Mumbai or the suave Delhi, no one is spared the horror of watching people opening urinating and defecating in the public - even if there are public toilets or restaurants around. Imagine going to the Worli Sea Face, or sitting near Bandstand in Bandra, when you should be enjoying the cool breeze and have the misfortune of seeing someone's backside instead.

Secondly, another stinking habit of ours: Spitting in public. You must have seen paan-stained walls at least once in your life... If not that you would have come across people spitting on the roads irrespective of whether they are rich or poor. I don't have anything against paan or tobacco mind you... it is just that paan-stained walls stink like crazy.

Throwing garbage on the road, in the canals, anywhere and everywhere except the dustbin is another shameful deed that we Indians do. We litter whereever we go, be it cinema halls, playgrounds, parks, zoos, offices and even our homes. The least we can do is to keep a plastic bag in our bags to keep the waste with us until we find a way to dispose of it.

3. Punctuality

There is a joke that most Indians report on Indian Stretchable Time.

IST refers to how usually we report late... for everything... appointments, going to work, school or college, you name it. I mean it has become so ingrained in us to report late that we expect everything around us to be like that. There is always talk of how trains are late all the time and why the Indian Railways never improves. Or how you have to factor in at least half an hour into your travel time because either the cab guy will be late, or the flight will take off late.

In a country where going late has become a fashion, even a company like IndiGo has come out with an ad saying being on time makes a whole lot of sense. And how do we react to punctual people? We are in awe!!!

4. Judiciary: Nearly 30 million cases pending

In India, if you file a case, your case might come up for hearing 10 years later. Well, with a population of 1 billion and counting what would you expect? India could take some lessons from the US on litigation -- a country where people get sued if their dog poops on the road, or they show cruelty towards their cat.

Over three million cases are pending in India's 21 high courts, and an astounding 26.3 million cases are pending in subordinate courts across the country. At the same time, there are almost a quarter million under-trials languishing in jails across the country. Of these, some 2,069 have been in jail for more than five years, even as their guilt or innocence is yet to be ascertained.

The only thing that works in India is money and muscle power -- even in the judiciary. Not true? Tell me one case of where a politician or an actor or a businessman who is accused of some really serious crimes (mostly they do turn out to be true even though we have to give everyone the benefit of the doubt) actually punished?

Take the case of the Anti-Sikh riots. Despite 16 years of courts and cases and more cases, not one accused has been brought to book. Congress MPs Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler have been charged with murder in the case. Yet, both of them roam freely.

The ex-chief executive officer of Satyam, now Mahindra Satyam, Ramalinga Raju is now "recuperating in a hospital" when he should be serving time in a jail for embezzling thousands of crores of rupees from his company. That is another fad: Feigning illness to escape going to jail.

Actors too are not far behind. Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt have been in the limelight mostly for all the wrong things they have done rather than their acting. Sanjay Dutt, who is one of the six accused in the 1993 Mumbai riots case, was sentenced to six years in jail under the Arms Act but was exonerated for terror offences under the stringent TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act). Sanjay Dutt has moved on... He got married and is now a father.

In September 2002, Salman Khan ran his Land Cruiser over some pavement dwellers killing one and seriously injuring three people. At the time of the accident, Salman was returning from the J W Mariott Hotel in Juhu and heading for his home in Bandra. The actor was booked for rash driving and causing death due to negligence under sections 304, 279 and 388 of the Indian Penal Code. He is currently making movies....

5. Honour Killings: Partition horror act continues

The funny thing is there is nothing honourable about them. "Honour killings" is the murder of a family or a clan member by one or more family members in which the perpetrators believe that the victim is bringing dishonour upon the family, clan or community.

The rate at which honour killings are reported in India, it is a miracle that people still find the courage to fall in love outside their community. Widespread in most circles, conservatives or otherwise, in India or abroad, it shows up in different ways. Women and young girls are especially at the receiving end of such heinous crimes. Funny, people don't seem to think parading women naked and molesting them in public are not "dishonourable".

This "tradition" has its roots in the gory Partition saga, where many women were forcibly killed to save family honour. During those troubled times, there were a lot of forced marriages where Indians and Pakistanis would marry each other. This, in turn, led to them being declared social outcastes. But, it did not stop there. It became a bloodbath, which got sucked into the melee of all the things that came to define Partition.

This is not a practice relevant to India alone. It is practised in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Africa, the Middle East and many other countries. This is a genocide that needs to be addressed soon... before it gets any worse.

6. FCI: Nation starves, food grains rot

What is with the Food Corporation of India? They are supposed to be feeding millions of people and instead are doing everything in their power to make sure the food grains don't reach the masses. The FCI is responsible for procurement and storage of food grains.

Even as thousands and lakhs of people starve everyday, food grains rot in FCI godowns. In one of the latest exposes, the government has admitted that 61,000 metric tonnes of food grains, which could have fed about 8.4 lakh people for one year, was unfit for consumption. And the best part is, the FCI wants to export the unfit grains to our neighbours - Bangladesh and Nepal.

Now, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar is of the opinion that all reports on rotting of food grains are not "correct and quite exaggerated. "There are only certain cases of damage and we have suspended some officials," he added.
The remark came two days after the Minister conceded in the House that rotting of foodgrains was a "shameful" fact. He had said that over 11,700 tonnes of foodgrains worth Rs. 6.86 crore were found "damaged" in government godowns. We give food to rats, but don't have enough for our people.

Kerala to have India's largest mosque

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kozhikode in Kerala will soon have India's largest mosque where 25,000-30,000 devotees can pray at a time. Estimated to be built at Rs 40 crores, the structure measuring 2.5 lakh square feet will push Delhi's Jama Masjid to a distant second when it takes shape.

"The mosque is planned on a 12 acre plot. Eight acres will be set apart for landscaping and host a Mughal-style garden. The main structure will be confined to 4 acres," Shaar-i-Mubarak Grand Masjid architect Riyaz Mohammed told TOI.

The mosque is part of Muslim organisation Markazu-Ssaquafathi-Ssunniyyah's knowledge city complex at Karanthur near Kozhikode. The group's head and Islamic scholar Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musliyar has planned the mosque.

" Markaz Knowledge City will come up on 600 acres of land and will also have an engineering college, medical college and township. It will be based on Islamic traditions," said Mohammed. The mosque will also have a library for Islamic research and conference hall and will adopt the green building concept.

The home minister's statement on ' saffron terror' has naturally not amused the BJP. The main opposition party accuses the government of targeting Hindus."By using the term 'saffron terror', he has directly targeted the Hindus. It is part of the government's appeasement policy," said party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Black money trail: 'India drained of

Rs 20 lakh crore during 1948-2008'

NEW DELHI: In a season of swindles, kickbacks and scams, here is some more on the mother of them all. Black money — the popular moniker given to the billions seeded by dirty deals and whisked away abroad from the taxman's prying eyes — has received much attention in recent years.

The opposition never tires of screaming foul at the government. The government, for its part, is at pains to say it is doing all it can to track down the illegal stash.

Despite the cacophony, an estimate of the scads of black money in secret bank vaults overseas has long been one big unknown, resulting in a great deal of speculation and glib talk around the subject.

Finally, some help is at hand. A new study by an international watchdog on the illicit flight of money from the country, perhaps the first ever attempt at shedding light on a subject steeped in secrecy, concludes that India has been drained of $462 billion (Rs 20,556,848,000,000 or over Rs 20 lakh crore) between 1948 and 2008.

The amount is nearly 40% of India's gross domestic product, and nearly 12 times the size of the estimated loss to the government because of the 2G spectrum scam. The study has been authored by Dev Kar, a lead economist with the US-based Global Financial Integrity, a non-profit research body that has long crusaded against illegal capital flight.

Mr Kar, a former senior economist with the International Monetary Fund, says illicit financial flows out of India have grown at 11.5% a year, debunking a popular notion that economic reforms that began nearly two decades ago had tempered the creation and stashing away of black money overseas.

Outflows accelerated after reforms

If capital outflows were a child of the independence era, the problem came of age in the years after the reforms kicked in. Nearly 50% of the total illegal outflows occurred since 1991. Around a third of the money exited the country between 2000 and 2008.

"It shows that reforms seem to have accelerated the transfer of black money abroad," says Mr Kar, whose study titled 'The Drivers and Dynamics of Illicit Financial Flows from India: 1948-2008' sifts through piles of data on the issue over a period of 61 years. The study, which Mr Kar says is the most comprehensive one yet on illicit financial flows from India, will be made public on Thursday.

His report comes amid a renewed government push in recent months to pursue black money stashed abroad. In late August, the government signed an agreement with Switzerland — its banks top a list of usual suspects — that will enable exchange of information on tax evaders. New Delhi is also in talks with at least 20 tax havens, particularly Mauritius, to extract similar information.

The government is also attempting to gain a measure of the total unaccounted money circulating in the economy. The finance ministry last week approached the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy to get a fix on such money.

But M Govinda Rao, director of the institute, says his think-tank is yet to decide on going ahead with the exercise because it is not an easy task. "A study on this subject is a huge challenge because one is dealing with a very big problem that covers hordes of money from many sectors," he says.

Black money turned into an election issue during the 2009 general elections, with the BJP harping on the issue throughout its campaign. Its leader LK Advani has been the most vocal critic of the government on this issue, time and again questioning the government's resolve to chase illegal funds. Mr Advani recently urged the government to publish a white paper on the issue.

While Mr Advani was unavailable for comment, the government's detractors on this issue say there is more talk than action to address this issue.

"Everybody knows about the gravity of the problem, but the government has not shown the political will to bring the money back to India," says Prakash Karat, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

The government has, however, received praise from Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, which has been at the forefront of the fight against tax evasion. OECD, whose relentless offensive is largely credited with lifting the veil of secrecy over umpteen tax havens, hailed India's efforts to crack down on tax evasion and sign information exchange agreements earlier this year.

These are but short-lived answers, say experts, adding that an overhaul in the global financial system is central to a lasting solution. New tax havens will spring forth when pressure mounts on existing ones.

That is not to say there are only a few tax havens out there. Indeed, at least 91 such hotspots flourish across the globe. Asian countries, particularly Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau, too are emerging as new destinations for parking illicit funds.

Besides Switzerland and Mauritius, Indian money is also said to end up in Seychelles and Macau. Due to the illicit nature of these deposits, pinpointing the journey's end of the bulk of India's black money is tenuous at best.

The GFI study gives a measure of the amount of money that the government is chasing, but it is only a fraction of the $1.4 trillion that the BJP claims is the illegal stash.

GFI acknowledges as much, saying its figure is conservative and hasn't taken into account smuggling and certain types of trade mischief. It also admits to gaps in available statistics, lamenting the lack of data on the consolidated fiscal balance with the government, which has hampered research. If these indicators were counted, India's total illicit outflows would well be half a trillion dollars.

Ajmer blasts show

true face of RSS, says Cong

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday tore into the RSS for “communalism”, saying that links of its functionaries with the Ajmer blasts had exposed the “true character of the leader among the Hindutva Parivar”.
“Recent revelations through detailed investigations have exposed the true character of the RSS and its sister organisations. The investigations indicate the involvement of its members in terrorist activities,” said the resolution adopted at the meeting of the newly-elected AICC, which confirmed Sonia Gandhi as party chief.(TOI)

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday tore into RSS for “communalism”, saying that links of its functionaries with the Ajmer blasts have exposed the “true character of the leader among the Hindutva Parivar”. “Recent revelations through detailed investigations have exposed the true character of the RSS and its sister organisations. The investigations indicate the involvement of its members in terrorist activities,” said the resolution adopted at the meeting of the newly-elected AICC which confirmed Sonia Gandhi as party chief.
Senior party leaders including Rahul Gandhi have accused the RSS of terrorism. The strong mention of linkage suggests that what start
ed off as random snipings at the Sangh have now crystallised into a party line, in what could lead, in the near run, to a confrontation with the BJP in Parliament and, in the longer run, a strong challenge to regional parties which pride themselves on their robust secularism.
In her speech, Sonia spared the RSS, but stressed that the Ayodhya verdict did not condone the demolition
of Babri Masjid.
The address brought out the party’s resolve to stick to left-of-centre welfare politics, the “aam aadmi” plank, underlined the aspiration to reclaim the chunks it lost to regional parties, elevated environmental protection to the top of the hierarchy of organisational concerns, and made plain Sonia’s annoyance with the government for its failure to control inflation.
The tone on inflation was stern and could take away from the appreciation for the PM for cushioning the country from the global downturn. She also made it plain that she would judge the government by how it tackles the recalcitrant phenomenon, rather than booming stock exchanges and inflows of foreign investments.

The challenge thrown, by the party president as well as Rahul, at regional parties can lead to strain in ties with allies, particularly the DMK. The party’s irrigation with the Trinamool and the NCP is also too well known. But it is dependent on Mamata Banerjee for its larger project to weaken Left since it has the potential to be the pivot for efforts to create an alternative “secular” coalition at the Centre. NCP holds the key to the survival of the Congress-led coalition in Maharashtra, besides providing crucial numbers at the Centre.
In comparison, DMK’s leverage has weakened, not least because it depends on Congress support in Chennai and because AIADMK is ready to take its place in the UPA column.

Unity Circle

We are proud of the fact that India is one of the most diverse countries in the world. India is a colourful canvas portraying a unique assimilation of ethnic groups displaying varied cultures and religions. India is home to Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism and Christianity. The Indian culture varies like its vast geography. India has recognised 22 different languages and hundreds of dialects that add to the multilingual nature of the country.

India's diversity has always been recognised as a source of its strength. British tried to subvert India’s “Unity in Diversity” by propagating own theory of “Divide and Rule”. Unity and patriotism displayed by Hindus and Muslims before and during 1857 war of Independence forced British to follow the policy of Divide and Rule aggressively. Hindu-Muslim living peacefully in India for centuries were pushed for communal divide when first communal riot took place in August 1893 in Mumbai.

Soon British mastered this art and successfully used in every occasion. Biggest casualty of this was partition of India.

India witnessed its worst communal riots in 1948 after the partition. There was a brief period of lull but this was shattered by Jabalpur (M.P.) riot in 1961. Our opportunist politicians were quick to realise that the policy perused by British can be applied in to-to to rule India. This short cut to power they cherished most. These opportunist parties and politicians are growing strength to strength, after successfully using “Divide and Rule” in local elections and now they are fighting general election on this agenda.

It is in our national interest that these divisive parties and politicians are defeated at earliest. India march to development can not be halted by few selfish souls. Our future will be at stake if we allow unwanted elements to divide us in the name of religion, caste, region and language. Those elements need to be indentified and isolated.

In an effort to highlight our Ganga-Jamuni Tahzeeb, common culture and heritage, TwoCirlcles.net is presenting Unity Circle. In this section we will highlight stories promoting communal harmony.

By MD RASOOLDEEN | ARAB NEWS

RIYADH: A well-known Indian psychotherapist embraced Islam on Thursday.

Dr. Periyadarshan, who has changed his name to Abdullah, told Arab News Friday that Islam is the only religion in the world that follows a book directly revealed from God.

He said that as a student of comparative religions he believes books of other faiths have not been directly revealed to mankind from God. He said the Holy Qur’an is still in the same format and style as it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) from Almighty Allah.

Dr. Abdullah is a visiting professor at the University of California in Los Angeles.

He also acted in the famous Tamil film “Karuthamma” about the killing of newborn baby girls in some remote villages in India. The production received national award from the Indian government.

“I was well known in India for my atheist theology and later I became to realize that religion is the only way out for human beings both in this world as well as in the hereafter,” he said.

Dr. Abdullah will be performing Umrah on Saturday on his first visit to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

Transplanting hope

M. Somasekhar

With over 800 liver transplant procedures to his name, Dr Mohamed Rela is one of the world's top liver transplant surgeons. His work won him an entry in the Guinness Book of Records in 2000.

On `Mothers Day', a unique story in organ transplantation unfolded in Hyderabad. The mother of a brilliant young school boy, Aditya Kaushik, who lost his life in a tragic and ill-fated fall from a terrace, took the rare and brave decision of donating all his organs. Consequently, the CARE hospitals harvested the heart, the Global Hospitals took the liver and kidneys and the boy's eyes went to the L.V. Prasad Eye Hospital. This noble act by the parents and the quick coordination by MOHAN (Multi-Organ Harvesting Aid Network), a Chennai-based NGO, to intimate hospitals about the organ donations gave a fresh lease of life to five people. Among the doctors involved in the memorable feat was Dr Mohamed Rela, a UK-based Liver transplant surgeon of international fame and Indian origin. He led the team at the Global Hospitals where the liver transplant was done.

At 45 years, he is considered to be among the top liver transplant surgeons of the world. Dr Rela has a record of 800 liver transplants against his name, including the one preformed on his youngest patient — a five-day-old Irish boy, which won him entry into the Guinness Book of Records in 2000.

The surgeon, who heads one of the four top-notch transplant teams at the King's College and Hospitals, London, has pioneered the `split liver' transplant surgery which involves the division of a healthy donor organ to ensure that two patients' lives are saved. In addition, he is an expert at live donor transplants.

However, the journey to the top for this native of Mayiladuthurai village in Tamil Nadu has been a rough one. A student of the well known Kalakshetra School, Chennai, and later a graduate in medicine from The Stanley Medical College, Chennai, Dr Rela says he always wanted to be a doctor, especially a surgeon. However, in Chennai he had to wait for two years before he could specialise in surgery. So, after an MS from Stanley, he went to the UK, where he did an MS from Edinburgh and also got an FRCS by 1988.

For five to six years Dr Rela worked as a surgeon in various hospitals in the UK before he made it to the prestigious King's College and Hospital in 1994. "The first liver transplant was done here in 1989 and I was really fortunate to enter the field and King's College at the right time. It gave me the opportunity to develop new techniques. I have now worked for over 10 years in the field of liver transplantation at the largest liver transplant programme in Europe, where over 190 liver transplant operations are performed every year, " he says.

Dr Rela started the successful programme of split liver transplantation at King's College Hospital and popularised it in the country. King's now has the largest experience in the world for split liver transplantation with results not matched by other major international units. It is also the only centre in the UK performing living related liver transplantation.

On treatment procedures in India, he says that as the incidence of liver complaints was not high and hence the awareness levels were lower. He says that only five per cent of liver diseases can be attributed to alcohol, while hepatitis B and C are the major risk factors. Liver cancer is triggered by hepatitis B or C. While the former can be prevented by a vaccine, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C. Further, liver cirrhosis is not reversible, says the surgeon.

Liver transplant is offered today to people who are likely to die in one year. The success rates for stabilising chronic liver diseases is 90 per cent, while in acute liver diseases it is 80 per cent. If the recipient survives 5-10 years post transplant, he is likely not to die of liver-related diseases later. Today, there are patients who have survived a liver transplant for 25-30 years, compared to about 10 -15 years survival in heart transplant cases. Interestingly, the incidence of rejection of the organ is also comparatively low, since "the liver is an immunologically privileged organ compared to the heart or kidney."

However, the big problem is getting donors. In eastern countries such as Japan and China, cultural beliefs come in the way of organ donation. Even in India, the donora are a handful in a population of over one billion. It is estimated that in Western countries, the figure of organ donors is about 15-16 out of a million population and most of them are multi-organ donors. In Spain, this number touches 32 per million. For organ donation to improve there is an urgent need for high quality and well-equipped Trauma Centres.

While there has been tremendous success in other organ transplants such as the heart and the kidney, liver transplants, and even developing an artificial liver, has been far more challenging, says Dr Rela. This is because the liver is a much more complex organ. Whereas the heart's main function is to pump blood and the kidney functions like a filter, the liver performs numerous tasks from aiding digestion, to metabolising fat to blood clotting. However, liver transplants with a good success rate have become a reality in select countries in spite of the high cost of the procedure. In some cases, an artificial liver is used, which provides dialysis as in the case of a kidney, and acts as a temporary life support system.

Having published more than 100 scientific papers and trained a large number of surgeons who have set up the liver transplant programme around the world, Dr Rela is now concentrating on developing techniques which would help do away with liver transplant. These include, cell therapy and stem cells. The third area is research on new immunosuppressant drugs, which will be better tolerated by the human body, and therefore reduce the rate of rejection.

In cell therapy, the thinking is that instead of replacing the liver, a single cell injected into the recipient would slowly grow into a normal liver. Experiments have been conducted from foetal cells, cadaver cell and even cells from certain animals like dogs, but there are ethical questions attached to these procedures.

Stem cell therapy, on the other hand, is an area that needs to be more intensively researched before it becomes reality, says Dr Rela. The surgeon believes in sharing of expertise, especially among developing countries. He has been personally involved in building up the infrastructure in some units apart from performing operations at different centres.

Dr Rela's association with India has increased in recent times after his collaborative efforts at the Hyderabad-based Global Hospitals, which has established a full-fledged liver transplant facility. The Technology Development Board (TDB) venture fund, under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has provided a funding of Rs 10 crore. During the last one year, Dr Rela has been the main driving force at the Global Hospitals, conducting liver transplants in Hyderabad.

The specialist who will treat Mahajan

Last updated on: April 23, 2006 15:02 IST

Dr Mohamed Rela, who has flown in from London [ Images ] Sunday morning to help in the treatment of Bharatiya Janata Party [ Images ] general secretary Pramod Mahajan [ Images ], is one of the world foremost liver transplant specialists.

Rela heads a transplant team at the King's College Hospital, London.

The BJP leader, who was shot by his brother Pravin at his Mumbai [ Images ] home on Saturday, has extensive injuries to his liver. Doctors at the Hinduja Hospital have been working round-the-clock to contain bleeding from the liver. Dr Rela and his team have been called in to explore the possibility of a liver transplant – if that is possible given the state Mahajan is in.
The 47-year-old has more that 800 liver transplants to his credit. His liver transplant on a five-day-old Irish infant got him an entry to the Guiness Book of Records in 2000.

The surgeon was born in Mayiladuthurai village in Tamil Nadu. He got his medical degree from Stanley Medical College, Chennai. After completing an MS from the same college, he went to the United Kingdom and got another MS and then got an FRCS in 1988.

Dr Rela also has signed an agreement with Global Hospitals, Hyderabad, to provide for living related liver transplantation surgery free of cost to children below the age of 12.

He has also pioneered 'split liver' transplant surgery, which involves the division of a healthy donor organ to help transplant it to two patients. He is also an expert at live donor transplants.

He has published more than 100 scientific papers related to liver transplantation. And helped train surgeons and set up liver transplant programmes around the world.

ALL’S VEIL: The half-a-dozen Hindu teachers at the Al-Jamiatul Fikriya school in Mumbai say the veil doesn’t come in the way of education

alaikum. The teacher, lifting her face veil, embarks on her lecture on the food chain and regales her students with facts about the predatory habits of different animals. After the class, she leaves the room, vanishing into a group of identically dressed women teachers relaxing in the common room downstairs.

This scene could well belong to any moribund Muslim-run madrassa or maktab anywhere in the country, but it doesn't. The school in question is the Al-Jamiatul Fikriya, an Islamic international school run from a three-storied building at Mazgaon in Mumbai; more importantly, the burqa-clad teacher is not a Muslim but a Maharashtrian Hindu called Shefali Shirodkar. And Shirodkar isn't alone - she's one of half a dozen Hindu teachers who observe full purdah while they are on the premises of the school.

While liberal men and liberated women in the Muslim community desperately want to tear off the custom of wearing the "oppressive" burqa or hijab, these Hindu women seem to have no issues with it and even claim they are "comfortable" in its voluminous folds. "As a teacher, my job is to impart education. Why should a burqa be a barrier in giving education?" asks Shirodkar, who joined the school in 2008 and claims that she immensely enjoys her job along with the Islamic dress code. So does Rakhi Hawale, the school's librarian, who, however , was a bit hesitant when she first donned the tent-like gown five years ago. "I tripped a few times initially, but now I wear it with the ease of my Muslim colleagues," says Hawale who is unmarried and hasn't given a thought to whether her future spouse will object to her wearing a burqa. "I convinced my parents and hopefully will be able to convince my husband too," she smiles.

Suhail Sheikh, the school's founder, claims he is just following the Islamic principle of justice which does not allow a Muslim to discriminate against his or her non-Muslim employees. "These teachers were recruited after rounds of interviews. We told them about the Islamic dress code in advance. I think it's a healthy trend that non-Muslims have started teaching in Islamic schools," explains 41-year-old Sheikh, who himself is not highly educated but values education a lot. "It's open to everyone," he says of his school. "I hope we'll soon have non-Muslim students too."

It was this 'secular' approach of the school management that attracted retired colonel N S Rawat to the administrator's job here a year ago. "I have served in the army, which is one of the most secular institutions in our country. I also saw this job as an opportunity to understand Islam and Muslims better," he says. For the 30-odd faculty and other staff and 300 students, from standard one to ten, studying Islam is part of the ritual. So, from the morning assembly, when a hymn in Urdu is chanted loudly, to the quotes from the Quran and the Hadith written prominently on the walls, the school wears Islam as a mascot.

Both Hindu and Muslim teachers see their tenure here as a unique opportunity to bridge the communal chasm. "I knew very little about Islam and Muslims before I joined here," says Reema Dicholkar, who teaches Marathi. Dicholkar says her students - boys in kurta-pyjama and skullcaps and girls above the fifth standard in mandatory burqas - are curious to know about Hinduism. "They listen to stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata with rapt attention. Just as I like to hear stories about the Prophet, they are interested in stories about Hindu gods and goddesses," says Dicholkar, who was a little hesitant about working in an Islamic school when she was offered the job a few years ago. "For me it was an alien world. I never had a Muslim friend or neighbour. I thought Muslims were angry and violent. Many of my relatives didn't approve of it, but my father backed me, and now I enjoy my job," says Dicholkar who lives in Lalbaug, a Maharashtrian Hindu hub in Mumbai.

The first two hours of the day are devoted to Islamic teachings, imparted by maulanas, most of them graduates of the Islamic seminary Darul Uloom at Deoband (UP). The school, which follows two syllabi - those of the Maharashtra Board and Cambridge University's International General Certificate Education (IGCE) - despite its orthodox discipline, has instilled modern ambitions in its students. Says Mehek Beg, 9th-standard student: "I am interested in science and want to become an astronaut." When asked if the burqa will be a barrier in achieving her goal, she ripostes: "The burqa is not a barrier to my Hindu teachers, who had never worn it before they stepped in here. It should not be a hurdle on my way to becoming an astronaut, Inshallah ." To which, everyone, including chinky-eyed Beg's Hindu teachers, nod.

Indian workers sold like cattle

in Saudi Arabia: Stowaway
Rachna Singh, TNN 4 January 2010, 01:25am IST

JAIPUR: Habib Hussain of Moradabad, who hid in a toilet on an Air India flight from Saudi Arabia to return to his own country, says he did so for

his two children, his pregnant wife, and an ailing mother. After his bizarre experience, Habib says he has realised that `aadhi roti' (half a piece of bread) at home is better than one in an alien land. He also said Indian labour is sold like cattle in that country.

He had sold his two `bigha' land for Rs 1.25 lakh and left behind just about Rs 11,000 for his family after paying the agent. He now tearfully says, ``There was no point in staying in Saudi. I just had to return. My wife was two months pregnant when I left and will have a baby any time now. My family was hungry here; I was hungry there. I was better off earning Rs 80 a day and feeding my family rather than living on a promise of Rs 15,000-20,000 and not getting a paisa.

``I know there could have been serious problems during the flight, but I had confidence in my countrymen. Moreover, I was ready to face any consequence in India which would have been better than living in Saudi Arabia,'' he says.

``After grazing goats until noon, I offered namaz. In the evening, after helping a Haji with his bags, I slipped into a toilet in the lower deck of the aircraft. Forty-five minutes after the plane took off, an air hostess saw me. After she heard my story, she gave me a seat and food,'' said Habib.

All that Habib got to eat in the six months that he was away was one roti and a bowl of dal worth Re 1 each day - bought from the money that the Hajis tipped him with. ``I didn't get a penny from my employer and started saving whatever I could to get back to my country. I could manage to save Rs 800 and thought if my passport was returned to me, I could board a flight to India. But whenever we asked for our passports, we were kicked and thrashed and made to work for over 14 to 18 hours a day,'' he said.

``Indian labour is sold in Saudi like cattle and thousands of Indians from UP and Bengal are suffering there. They are helpless without their passports,'' said Habib. ``My agent (Imran) got an assignment to provide 50 labourers from India. We were recruited and sent in groups of five, 10 and 20. After landing, I was made to work in Jeddah for a month. I grazed goats during the day and worked as a cleaner at the airport in the evenings. I worked for 14-18 hours a day. Thereafter, I was sold to a `khafil' or agent in Medina who required 500 people. In Medina, I worked for over 15 hours daily. I wept and wondered how my family was doing back home,'' he said.

``My father passed away two years back and my mother is ill and needs medication. I just want to get back home. I hope my case will be seen with empathy. Who will feed my children if I am put behind bars?'' he asked.

Congress cannot be forgiven for Babri demolition: AIMPLB

PTI 20 December 2009, 06:18pm IST
LUCKNOW: Asserting the Congress
and former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao could never be forgiven for the
demolition of Babri mosque, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board on Sunday
said the Liberhan Commission overlooked the judicial process in the case of
BJP leader A B Vajpayee."How can the Congress be forgiven for the demolition
of Babri mosque. Neither the party nor late Rao can be forgiven for the
demolition of the historical structure in Ayodhya," said AIMPLB spokesman
Maulana Abdul Rahim Quraishi. The Board had not given any clean chit to Rao
he told reporters in Lucknow."Narasimha Rao was equally responsible
(for the razing of the mosque) and there is no question of giving him a clean chit.
"Even the Liberhan Commission had not given any clean chit to Rao in its report,
" Quraishi, also the assistant general secretary of the board, said.
On Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was indicted by the Liberhan Commission, he said
being the leader of the party, he was also equally responsible for the demolition.
"But technically Vajpayee should have been given a notice which was not done by
the commission," Quraishi said.

Goa blast: Malgonda Patil linked to

two more Hindu organizations

PTI 17 December 2009, 12:32pm IST

PANAJI: Goa home ministry has said that Malgonda Patil, prime accused in the Margao blast, was also a managing trustee of two more Hindu

organizations besides his association with Sanatan Sanstha.

The names of these two Hindu organisations -- Dharma Prachar Sabha and Hindu Dharma Prathisthan -- had surfaced publicly for the first time since October 16, when a blast triggered panic in the commercial town of Margao in South Goa.

The record furnished on the floor of the House during the ongoing state Legislative Assembly session has confirmed Patil's links to these two institutions.

Patil (28), a native of Sangli in Maharashtra, till date was known only for his links with Sanatan Sanstha, a right-wing Hindu organisation operating from Ramnathi village of Goa.

Patil died when the bomb he had planned to plant triggered prematurely.

Yogesh Patil (29), a Goan native, also died in the blast, which occurred on Diwali eve and was a part of larger conspiracy to trigger serial explosions in the state.

Home minister Ravi Naik in a statement in the floor of the House said that gelatin sticks, detonators and timer circuits were used to set off the explosion.

He said that immediately after the blast, chief minister Digamber Kamat, alongwith Fatorda constituency Legislator Damodar Naik, visited the spot.

Rangnath Commission recommends

10% quota for Muslims

NEW DELHI: The government-appointed Justice Rangnath Commission has recommended 10% reservation for Muslims and 5% for other minorities in

government jobs and favoured Scheduled Caste status for Dalits in all religions.

The report of the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities, headed by former Chief Justice of India Rangnath Mishra, was tabled by Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid in the Lok Sabha today.

Among a host of recommendations, the Commission recommends delinking of Scheduled Caste status from religion and abrogation of the 1950 Scheduled Caste Order which "still excludes Muslims, Christians, Jains and Parsis from the SC net."

The Order originally restricted the SC status to Hindus only but was later opened it to Buddhists and Sikhs.

With regard to quota, the Commission says that 10% should be reserved for Muslims and five% for other minorities in central and state government jobs in all cadre and grades.

It added that in case of non-availability of Muslims to fill the 10% earmarked seats, these may be made available to other minorities but in "no case" shall any seat within the recommended 15% shall be given to anybody from the majority community.

Member Secretary of the Commission Asha Das has, however, given a note of dissent on the the Commission's recommendation for conferment of SC status on Dalit converts to Christianity and Islam saying there was "no justification" for it.

Besides, she has said that as Dalit converts to Christianity/Islam do not qualify for inclusion as SCs, they should continue to form part of OBCs and avail facilities and reservations given to the OBCs until a comprehensive list of Socially and Educationally Backward (SEB) is prepared.

The Commission has, however, rejected the contentions made by Das in the dissent note and said "(we) firmly stand by every word of the recommendations, we have made under this term of reference."

The Commission also suggested an alternative route for reservation to minorities if there is "insurmountable difficulty" in implementing the recommendation for 15 reservation.

In this regard it said since minorities constitute 8.4 percent of the total OBC population according to the Mandal Commission report so in the 27 percent OBC quota, an 8.4 percent sub quota should be earmarked for minorities.

The internal break-up should be 6 percent for the Muslims, commensurate with their 73 percent share in the total minority population at the national level and 2.4 percent for other minorities.

Besides it has recommended that the reservation now extended to the Scheduled Tribes, which is a religion neutral class, should be carefully examined to assess the extent of minority presence in it and take remedial measures.

The Commission noted that the minorities especially the Muslims are very much under-represented and sometimes wholly unrepresented in government jobs.

The report of the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities headed by former Chief Justice of India Rangnath Mishra, is considered a step ahead of Sachchar Committee report that went into the backwardness of minorities mainly Muslims.

The Commission, was notified in October 2004 and began functioning in 2005. Two years later, it submitted its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in May 2007.

There were consistent demands from other parties except BJP for tabling the report in Parliament and implement its recommendations. A number of MPs from different parties had also demanded that the government should come out with Action Taken Report (ATR) on it.

However, Khurshid had made it clear that ATR was not mandatory as the particular Commission was not constituted under the Commission of Enquiry Act.

The Terms of Condition (ToR) for the Commission were for identifying socially, economically and backward classes among religious and linguistic minorities and suggesting measures of welfare for minorities including reservation.

Muslim can become PM

person for it, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said here on Monday.

"It is not about what religion or community you come from, it is what you bring to the table, what capability you have," he said in an interaction with students of the Aligarh Muslim University.

He was replying to a question that having come a long way after Independence how much more time will it take for India to have its first Muslim prime minister.

"Today, Manmohan Singh is not the Prime Minister of India because he is a Sikh. He is the Prime Minister because he is the most capable person to do the job.

"And let me tell you something that even when you do have a Muslim prime minister, he will be a prime minister because he is the most capable person," 39-year-old Gandhi said.

He told a questioner, "You need to step up and the number of leaders coming out of your community needs to go up. You got today a Sikh prime minister that nobody would have ever imagined in a country of over a billion people that we would have a Sikh prime minister. Sikhs are a very small percentage of this country."

Gandhi said his effort was to involve people from different communities and from different parts of India in the political system.

Exhorting Muslim youths to participate in national politics in a big way, Gandhi said, "Increased participation of Muslim youths is the ideal way to take on problems not only of the Muslim community but the country as a whole."

He said it was unfortunate that today there was hardly any young Muslim leader active in national politics.

Earlier, Gandhi was given a rousing reception on his arrival at the AMU campus. He first drove to the grave of AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan to pay tributes.

The Aligarh Muslim University Teachers' Association, which also hosted a reception in his honour, described his visit as "historic" and called Gandhi "the modern face of Congress party in India."

DEMOLITION OF BABRI MOSQUE MIRACLE THAT CHANGED HINDU EXTREMISTS TO MUSLIMS.
Written by Admin
Saturday, 17 January 2009
DEMOLITION OF BABRI MOSQUE ─ MIRACLE THAT CHANGED HINDU EXTREMISTS TO MUSLIMS.
The demolition of the Babri Mosque in Ayodhiya, India by Hindu extremists on December 6, 1992 is a well-known tragic event in recent Indian history. Two of the most ardent extremists who took part ─ Balbir Singh of Shiva Sena's (Hindu extremist organisation) Youth Flying Squad; and Yogender Pal ─ have BECOME MUSLIMS; taking the names of Mohamed Aamir and Mohamed Omar respectively, after a most shocking tragedy which befell them! (What the tragedy was, is a long account; refer to the book for details).
As atonement for the sin committed by them (demolition of the Babri Mosque) one of them ─ Bro.Mohamed Omar ─ has taken an oath that he would build 100 mosques in villages where there are no mosques; and the other ─ Bro.Mohamed Aamir ─ has vowed that he would renovate 100 mosques that are in dilapidated condition. Till December 2004, Bro.Mohamed Omar has built 20 new mosques; while Bro.Mohamed Aamir has renovated 13 mosques.
Their aim: to complete at least 1 new mosque; and renovate at least 1 dilapidated mosque by 6th December each year.
Their message: If the Muslims had done their duty ─ explaining to non-Muslims about Islam and the sanctity of mosques ─ the most heart-breaking tragedy of demolition of Babri Mosque would not have happened. Those members of Shiva Sena, Bajrangdal (Hindu extremist organisation) and others, who took part in the demolition of Babri Mosque, do not know anything about Islam; nor about Muslims, Al-Quran, and the sanctity of mosques. If we had known then, things would have been different: no demolition of the mosque would have occurred.

If only Pal Thackery, Vinay Kattiyar, Uma Barathi, Asoksingh Kal (all leaders of Hindu extremists organisation in India) had known the truth in Islam, they would have realised that Islam is their religion also; and that it is necessary for them too; and each of them would have taken it as his duty to rebuild the Babri Mosque at his own expense.

MY JOURNEY TO ISLAM

MOSQUE BREAKERS

BECOME MOSQUE MAKERS

6th December 1992 : Balbir Singh, Vice president Shiv Sena Youth Wing leads the demolition squad and becomes the first person to strike his pickaxe against the central Dome of Babri Masjid. Within minutes the whole structure is razed to ground.

25th June 1993 : Balbir Singh takes rebirth as Mohammad Aamir when he embraces Islam (Al-hamdu Lillah) having lived lives and experienced psyches poles apart from each other. Mohammad Aamir admonishes the Muslim Ummah about their responsibilities and is trying his utmost to awaken them from the slumber they are in.

Master Mohammad Aamir (former Balbir Singh) gives in this write-up( Part-I) a detailed account of his sensational phase of life beginning from affiliations with the Shiv Sena Youth Wing to his ultimate reversion to Islam, as narrated to Ahmad Awah of Armugan-i-Waliullah, Phulat, U.P.

I COME FROM A VILLAGE OF district Panipat in Haryana. Born in a Rajput family on 6th December 1970, I was named Balbir Singh. My father in addition to being an honourable farmer was headmaster in the primary school. A good human being at heart his religion was philanthropy. Cruelty in any form and against anyone was just unbearable for him. He was an eye witness to the communal roits of 1947 and would talk about these with a heavy heart. He considered the massacre of Muslims (during the partition and riots following that) a blot on the face of India and was always on the forefront in rehabilitating the remaining Muslims. Muslim children in the school and their education was his special concern. I did my matriculation from the local high school and got admission for my intermediate in Panipat.

Joining the Shiva Sena

Panipat is a strong hold of Shiva Sena perhaps second only to Mumbai. The youth and the people associated with schools are very much linked to Shive Sena. I came across some Shiva Sainks and ultimately got enrolled in Panipat branch of the Sena. Owing to the historical position of Panipat, the youth there are poisoned against Muslims especially Babar and other Muslim rulers. When my father came to know that I had joined Shive Sena he tried to advise me and explain the situation from historical perspective. He would relate the stories of justice and unbiased treatment meted out by Babur and Aurangzeib towards their non-Muslim subject. He would explain that the British distorted the history and made us fight each other and weaken the nation. In light of the communal roits and massacres of 1947 he tried his utmost to keep me away from Shive Sena, but I wouldn’t listen.

I was entrusted with special responsibilities during 1990 Rath Yatra of L.K. Advani. During the Rath Yatra our leaders poisoned us against Muslims and the hatred against the community was at its climax. I swore by Shivaji “Come what may, I will go alone and demolish the bloody structure at the site of Ram Mandir”.

As a reward for my services during Rath Yatra I was elevated to the position of Vice President Shive Sena Youth Wing. I took charge of my young team and reached Ayodhia on 30th October. Enroute police stopped us at Faizabad. I along with some of my friends escaped from police and reached Ayodhiya but it was too late. The situation had got out of control and police had resorted to firing. Consequently Babri Masjid was sealed off. After trying so hard I could not reach Babri Masjid, my hatred for Muslims was out of bounds. I would repeatedly tell my companions “better to die than live like this. How unjust! Ram’s servants be shot at, right at Rams birth place and that too because of these bloody Arab pirates”. I was infuriated and wanted to go to Lucknow to shoot Mulayim Singh with my own hands. Roits were going on in the country and I was restless waiting for the moment when I could demolish Babri Masjid with my own hands.

Raizing the Babri Masjid

Day by day the unfortunate moment was approaching, which I considered a “moment of bliss” at that time. I took many of my hot headed friends with me and reached Ayodya well in advance on 1st December 1992. Yoginder Pal a young man from a Jat village of Sonipat was with me. He was my best friend. His father was a farmer and philanthropist too. In addition to his father, his uncle too had tried hard to stop their lone son from going to Ayodhiya, but to no avail.

The night before 6th December 1992, we had reached very close to the Babri Masjid and spent the night on the roof tops of the Muslim houses adjacent to the Babri Masjid. I had apprehensions that we might be stopped from the sacred mission like 30th October 1990. In the heart of my hearts, I was thinking of proceding for Kar Seva even if our leaders didn’t turn up, but our group leader stopped us and insisted on maintaining discipline. Oma Bharti’s speech turned the Kar Sevaks volatile. During her speech I along with Yoginder Pal came down from the roof of the house and ascended the roof of the Babri Masjid, with a spade in my hand. Oma Bharti shouted “Dhaka Aik aur doo, Babri Masjid tood doo” (one more blow, raze the Babri Masjid). That was it. I was seeing my dream coming true. I struck the central dome of Babri Masjid with a mighty blow of my spade coupled with an ear deafening shout; “Baghwan Ram Ki Jai”. Within minutes the job was over. Babri Masjid was no more there. With the mission accomplished our joy was boundless. After placing the statues of Ram there, we paid our respects and returned home happily taking with us two bricks of the Babri Masjid which I displayed to my friends in Panipat. My friends would praise me for my outstanding achievement. The bricks were placed in Shive Sena office and a gathering was organized to celebrate the event. Every one would praise me in his speech and the feeling of the pride, that in service of Ramji it was a youth of Panipat who struck his spade first on Babri Masjid, was running high.

My family disowns me

I proudly related this at my home. My father felt displeased and saddened and declared in no ambiguous words “Now you and me, both can not live in this home. If you live here I am going, otherwise you have got to leave. I do not want to see one who demolished Lord’s house. Do not show me your face till I die”. This was unexpected. I tried to make him understand and tried to explain the position of respect which I had achieved in Panipat. His reaction was that the nation was destined to doom owing to such exploiters and in a state of extreme anger he started to move out of the home. I sensed the gravity of the situation and volunteered to abandon the home where the servants of Ram Temple were called oppressors. So I left my home to live in Panipat.

My friend turns insane!

Yoginder Pal, my friend, announced that a couple of bricks of the brutal structure that stood at the place of Ram Temple are in our possession. My (Hindu) brethren are invited to express their faith by urinating the bricks. Every one would come and in utter contempt would take part in the nasty act of urinating on the bricks. The Lord of mosque was acting in His own way. Four or five days later Yoginder Pal experienced a total mental breakdown. In the state of complete lunacy he would tear down all his clothes. Being the lone son of honorable land lord the situation was turning disgusting. During these fits of madness he would time and again try to take off the clothes of his mother. He would cling to her and repeatedly attempted and demanded to commit incest with her.

Muslim Clerics Help

The family especially his father got extremely worried. They took him to many Muslim clerics, prayed for Lord’s forgiveness and would offer alms but Yoginder tried to molest his mother and only neighbours could save her after she cried for help. In order to keep the situation under control Yoginder was chained and his father decided to shoot him instead of risking the honour of the family. Just before he could put his plan in action some one suggested him to see the senior cleric (Molvi Sahab) in the Madrasa of Sonipat Eidgah. “Just see him once and if the situation doesn’t improve then you can do as you please” suggested the adviser. Chowdhry Ragubir Singh took his son Yoginder Pal to Sonipat, Eidgah but the cleric (Molvi Sb.) had left the day before. He was told that the cleric visits the school on 1st of every month for one day. Disappointed he started looking for the local cleric only to know that he too had left with senior one. A shopkeeper from the Eidgah gave him the address of cleric in Delhi and informed him that the cleric is coming to his residence Boowana,Delhi the following Wednesday. Along with chained Yoginder, Chowdhary Ragubir Singh heads for Boowana. The cleric of Boowana Mosque was a disciple of Molvi Kalim Sidiqi Sahib. The cleric informed Chowdhary that owing to the tight schedule Molvi Kalim Sidiqi Sahib has not been able to fulfil the desire of his friends to come to Boowana for a long time. But this time he has promised to be here (in Boowana) at Zuhar prayer after his two day trip in the area. The cleric of Boowana added that owing to the tense situation most of the clerics (Imams) and teachers had gone to their families in UP and many had not shown up even after a month. Molvi Kalim Sidiqi Sahib had delivered a speech on this topic and made clear that if Muslims had approached these non-Muslim brethren and explained the message of Islam, Allah and the mosques, the situation like 6th December 1992 would not have occurred. Molvi Sahib had added that we Muslims are equally responsible for the destruction of Babri Masjid and if we come to senses even now and discharge our duties regarding inviting others to the message of Islam these demolishers of the mosques will turn to be builders of the mosques. Prophet of Islam, Mohammad (May peace and blessings of Allah be on him) had prayed in similar situations “O Allah guide my people (to righteousness) for they know not (what they are doing)”.

At the time when Chowdhary Ragubir Singh met the cleric of Boowana (whose name was perhaps Molvi Bashir Ahmad) he was extremely impressed by the speech of his spiritual guide Molvi Kalim Sidiqi Sahib. He informed Chowdhary Ragubir Singh that he used to exorcize the evil spirits but now his spiritual teacher has advised him to abstain from that as lying and mixing with opposite sex is a prerequisite in that profession. Your son is not under any evil spell but this is a punishment from the Lord. You have got an opportunity, our spiritual guide is coming her on following Wednesday afternoon. You will have to put your problem before him, we hope your son will recover soon. But the deal is you will have to embrace Islam once your son recovers. Chowdhary Ragubir affirmed: “I am ready to do anything once my son recovers”.

Finally Allah’s Mercy Arrives

The following Wednesday Chowdhary Ragubir Singh reached Boowana at 8. a.m along with chained Yoginder. Molvi Kalim Sidiqi also arrived well before Zuhar prayer. With Yoginder Pal Singh chained and without clothes Chowdhary sahib cried bitterly and fell on the feet of Molvi Sahab, “Molvi Sahab, I tried to stop the rascal but he came under the influence of some rogues in Panipat”. Molvi Sahab refrained him from prostrating before him and then listened the whole story.

He said to Chowdhary Sahib, “By demolishing the house of Omnipotent Allah he has incurred such a wrath that if the Lord puts an end to the whole world it will be justified.” It was just too light a sentence from the Lord that only he is being punished. We too are his servants and we too are a party to that sacrilegious act. We have not discharged our duty of delivering the message of truth to the demolishers of the mosque. Now we can do nothing! Only way out is that you beg for forgiveness from the Lord and we too beg for His forgiveness”. Molvi Sahib added, “During the time we are in the mosque you concentrate towards Lord Almighty and with the broken heart pray for forgiveness. Pray O Lord only you can alleviate my misery”. Chowdhary Sahib fell again on his feet and submitted “If I were that good why would something like this have befallen me. You are close to Him, please do something”. Molvi Sahib said, “You have come to me for help. Now do whatever I say” Chowdhary Sahib tacitly accepted. Molvi Sahib went to the mosque, offered his prayers followed by a short speech and supplication. Molvi Sahib requested everyone to pray for Chowdhary Sahib. At the end of the programme some refreshment was served in the mosque.

Yoginder re-born as Mohammad Omar

When people were coming out of the mosque, Lord Almighty had already showered his mercies. Yoginder had covered his body with the turban of his father and was talking to his father as a normal human being. Every one was overjoyed. Imam Sahib of Boowana was delighted and reminded Chowdhary Sahib his promise. He also warned him that if he did not fulfill his commitment Yoginder’s position could be worse. Chowdhary sahib replied “Molvi Sahib my seven generations can not repay your generosity. I am at your disposal”. When Molvi Kalim Sidiqi came to know about this, he advised Imam Sahib that he has not exercised caution in dealing with the situation.

Chowdhary Sahib started moving towards mosque when Yoginder Pal asked, “Father where are you going?” He replied “To embrace Islam”. Yoginder said, “It is me who shall be the Muslism first as I have to construct the Babri Masjid again.” In such a pleasant atmosphere both performed ablutions and recited the Kalima- Islamic Testimony of Faith. Chowdhary Ragubir Singh was named Mohammad Usman and Yoginder Pal Singh was named as Mohammad Omar.
Overjoyed Mohammad Usman and Mohammad Omar both went to their village and met the Imam Sahib (cleric) of the small mosque of their village. Imam Sahib gave the good news to Muslims and soon everyone in the area came to know about the episode. Hindus too came to know about this and a meeting of influential members of the community was organized in urgency. In the meeting it was decided that both the persons shall be killed during the night. Otherwise many other’s faith will be at stake. One of the persons present in the meeting informed Molvi Sahib about the plan. With Allah’s blessing both were taken out of village and shifted to Phulat, U.P. A few days later both Mohammad Usman and Mohammad Omar went with Jamaat for forty days course. Later on his mother too embraced Islam. Mohammad Omer was married to an honourable family in Delhi. They have sold their property in the village and set up an industrial unit in Delhi, where all of them live happily now. (to be concluded)

B“6th December 1992: Balbir Singh, Vice president Shiv Sena Youth Wing leads the demolition squad and becomes the first person to strike his pickaxe against the central Dome of Babri Masjid. Within minutes the whole structure is razed to ground. 25th June 1993: Balbir Singh takes rebirth as Mohammad Aamir when he embraces Islam (Al-hamdu Lillah) having lived lives and experienced psyches poles apart from each other Mohammad Aamir admonishes the Muslim ummah about their responsibilities and is trying his utmost to awaken them from the slumber they are in. Here is the part II of his story in continuation to part I which appeared in the June issue of CRESCENT.

Pride hath a fall

My embracing Islam can not be separated from this story of Mohammad Omar (former Yoginder Pal Singh) which is incomplete yet. On 9th March 1993, my father succumbed to cardiac arrest. He was worried about the demolition of the Babri Masjid and my participation in the demolition. He used to ask my mother: “Why hasn’t Lord given us birth in some Muslim family. Being Muslim we could have been among the oppressed and not the oppressors”. He had advised the family that Balbir shall not attend his funeral. His body shall either be buried or thrown in water and not burned according to the customs of oppressors. He had advised that his body shall not be taken to Hindus crematory. Family members acted as per his will. I came to know about his death eight days later. My heart was broken. After his death the demolition of Babri Masjid seemed to me some gruesome act. I started feeling sorry instead of proud about that. With my heart sunk, whenever I visited my home my mother would cry in memory of my father. She would blame me for hurting the noble soul and subsequent death of my angle like father. Finally I stopped visiting my home.

Encounter with Truth

In June 1993, Mohammad Omar (former Yoginder) returned from Jamaat and came to visit me in Panipat. He related to me his story in detail. Since two months I was feeling scared as if something was going to befall me. My father’s tragic death and demolition of Babri Masjid were breaking my heart. The story of Mohammad Omar worried me further. Br. Omar insisted that I should see Molvi Kalim Sidiqi who was arriving in Sonipat on 23rd June. I scheduled the trip but was a little late. Br. Omar had reached early and told Molvi Sahib about me. When I reached there Molvi Sahib received me with love and affection and said, “What ever has happened to Omar (former Yoginder) who sinned at your behest can well be repeated by Almighty Lord with you too. Even if He does not punish anyone in this world the punishment in the eternal life of Hereafter is beyond your imagination”. After being with him for an hour I decided that if I have to save myself from some supernatural disaster I have to embrace Islam. Molvi Sahib was leaving for a two days trip. I expressed my desire to be with him during the trip, which was gladly accepted. One day in Haryana, then Delhi followed by Khorja and back to Phulat after two days. After these two days I was ready to embrace Islam. I expressed my desire to Br. Omar and he gladly conveyed the same to Molvi Sahib. On 25th June 1993 after Zuhar prayer I came within the fold of Islam (alhamdulillah). Mohammad Aamir was the name given to me by Molvi Sahib and he suggested me to remain in Phulat to study Islam and learn prayers, etc.

Family Welcomes my Reversion

I expressed my obligations regarding my wife and little child to Molvi Sahib and a house was arranged for me and my family. We continued in Phulat for a few months and constant teaching helped my wife to learn and understand Islam. Thank God she embraced Islam after three months.

When I told my mother about my reversion to Islam she was very happy and said, “Your father’s soul will rest in peace by this”. She too embraced Islam the same year.

New Mission

Brother Omar and myself decided to rehabilitate the abandoned mosques and construct some new one to somehow counter the evil we had incurred by demolishing the Babri Masjid. For smooth functioning, while co-operating with each other, I took the responsibility of rehabilitating the deserted mosques and Brother Omar took the responsibility of constructing new mosques. We have set a target of rehabilitating one hundred deserted mosques and constructing one hundred new mosques. With the grace of Almighty I (the sinner) have been able to rehabilitate thirteen abandoned and forcibly occupied mosques in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Meeruth upto 6th December 2004. Brother Omar is ahead of me. He has constructed twenty mosques and laid the foundation of twenty first (See note at the end). We have further decided that at each anniversary of Babri Masjid demolition on 6th December the regular prayers must be started in one deserted mosque and foundation must be laid for one new mosque. Thank God we have maintained this so far but the target of one hundred is yet far off. This year hopefully the progress is better. We are working on eight mosques and hope to rehabilitate those within a few months. Brother Omar is ahead of me. In fact my work is a part of only his work, for he became the reason to lead me out of darkness.

Now-a-days I am running an English medium junior high school with Islamic Studies as a part of our curriculum. In addition to my mother, my elder brother has also embraced Islam now.

Finally the Message

My submission to my Muslim brethren is that they should recognize objective of their life and consider Islam as something they owe to humanity. Just being anti-Muslim shall not persuade you for revenge against any one. Based on personal experience I am sure that if all the participants in Babri Masjid demolition whether Shiv Saniks, Bajrang Dal, or any other Hindu know about what Islam is, what a Muslim means, what Quran teaches or what a mosque prepares one for every one of them can think of constructing a mosque. The question of demolition of mosque will not arise.
I am sure if leaders like Bal Thakrey Ji, Vinay Katyar, Oma Bharti or Ashok Singhal will come to know about the spirit of Islam and that Islam is their’s too, they will consider themselves fortunate to help reconstruction of Babri Masjid at their expenses.

Some people are notorious for their anti-Muslim attitude and activities but out of one billion Hindus their number will not be even one lac- perhaps one lac is too big a number. The remaining ninety nine crore and ninety nine lac Hindus are just like my father- philanthropists, loving the Islamic principles from the core of their heart. Wasn’t my father a Muslim by nature. I consider my self to be a great sinner being the demolisher of Babri Masjid but even worse are the Muslism whose carelessness and indifference caused my dear father to end in hell. Molvi Sahib speaks with sincerity when he says, “You became, the demolishers of Babri Masjid as you didn’t know Muslims and Islam. You have sinned unknowingly. But Muslims deliberately promote the cause of leading others to hell”. The very idea of my father dying as a rejecter of faith renders my nights sleepless and compels me to resort to sleep inducing drugs.

I wish Muslims feel my pain.

Note : Br. Mohammad Aamir has been kind enough to visit Kashmir along with Allama Kaleem Siddiqui in May 2009. His visit was earlier scheduled last year, but could not materialize. In an interview to Crescent Br. Aamir said that till date 38 new mosques have been constructed by Br. Omar. He and his team have rehabilitated 69 mosques in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi & Meerut. – Editor

Home Minister PC take on

HINDU TERROR’ sparks row

New Delhi, Dec. 2: Replying to a debate on internal security in the Rajya Sabha, the home minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, also spoke of “jihadi and HINDU TERRORISM”, which evoked strong reactions from the BJP legislators.

The home minister said that terrorism across the world today is being “inspired by religious fanatics, which is taking various forms like jihadi terrorism and HINDU TERRORISM.” Mr Chidambaram said that out of the near dozen terror attempts foiled by security forces in the least one year, there have been attempts by Hindu militants too.

As the Opposition BJP raised objection to the use of the phrase “HINDU TERRORISM”, Mr Chidambaram said, “I cannot modify my statement to suit the BJP.

The home minister said that India continues to remain “vulnerable” to terrorist incidents as terror outfits like the LeT are coordinating their activities jointly with other groups and have even forged ties with the Al Qaeda. “In the last twelve months I have been reasonably lucky,” said Mr Chidambaram. Earlier, the home minister stated that neither a terror attack nor a communal incident hadtaken place in the country over the last one year and two days.

Referring to the Northeast, the home minister said the Ulfa is likely to make a political statement in the next few days and if that contains willingness to talk, the government is ready for a dialogue with the banned outfit on the condition that it abjures violence and gives up sovereignty demand.

Nanavati Commission

seeks phone details from

Narendra Modi's office

The Nanavati Commission probing the 2002 riots in Gujarat on Saturday asked the staff of Chief Minister Narendra Modi to provide details of their phone conversations with ministers during the riots that killed over 1,000 people, most of them Muslims.

Mukul Sinha, advocate for the NGO Janshangharsh Manch, said: "The commission has sought details of telephone conversations between the chief minister's staff and other ministers, and Jaideep Patel," then a leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, affiliated to the state's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The role of the Narendra Modi-led government has been under the scanner, with many victims and rights groups alleging complicity of its ministers in the riots. But despite the plea of the Manch, the commission had still not issued any summons to Modi or his staff to appear before it, Sinha told TV news channel NDTV 24x7.

Beard relief for boy
OUR LEGAL CORRESPONDENT

New Delhi, Sept. 11: The Supreme Court today permitted a Muslim student to go back to the Bhopal convent school from where he was thrown out for refusing to adhere to a no-beard rule.

Mohammed Salim was expelled last December by the Nirmala Convent Higher Secondary School for violating the rule that required all students to be clean shaven.

The bench of Justices B.N. Aggarwal and G.S. Singhvi found the case prima facie “ridiculous”. The judges asked the school to explain its stand on the no-beard rule and permitted the Class X student to go back to the institution till the issue was decided.

Salim lost his case in the high court, which recognised the school’s right to frame its own bylaws as a minority institution. He lost in the apex court, too, but that judgment was later withdrawn amid a controversy over comments of a judge who said that allowing beards would be tantamount to permitting Talibanisation.

When the hearing resumed today, Justice Aggarwal said: “How can you stop someone from coming to school because he has a beard? Next, you will say that fair-complexioned students will not be allowed.” Singhvi said: “Then you will say that those students with earrings are not allowed.”

Salim’s lawyer said the boy could not afford to go to another school. The court agreed. “The student will be permitted to pursue studies in the same institution,” i

CAN A Muslim student of a Christian minority school claim a fundamental right to sport a beard against the rules of the school?

A 16-year-old boy from Madhya Pradesh has moved Supreme Court against an order of the state high court rejecting his petition challenging the decision of Nirmala Convent Higher Secondary School to throw him out for refusing to shave his beard. Mohammad Salim, a Class X student, has sought quashing of the regulation that requires students to be clean-shaven on the grounds that it violates his fundamental right to religion under Article 25 of the Constitution.

The high court had in December 2008 accepted the school’s contention that it had the right to establish and administer a minority institution under Article 30 of the Constitution and frame its own rules. Supreme Court upheld this right in the P Inamdar .A.

and Others versus State of Maharashtra case, it had said.

The SC asked Salim to ascertain if the school is gov ernment-aided or not and posted the matter for hearing on March 30.

Salim, from Vidisha district, contended that every citizen should be allowed to follow his religious beliefs and none should restrain him from doing so in a secular India. He said keeping a beard is accorded high importance in Islam.

His counsel B.A. Khan argued: “The principal’s act to force the student to leave the school for keeping a beard was against his religious conscience, belief and custom of his family .” Pointing out that Sikhs are allowed to keep a beard and sport a turban, Salim alleged the school was discriminating against him.

Stating that the by-laws framed by a minority school should be “reasonable and rational”, he alleged he was being “harassed with some ulterior motive or due to some communal feeling, which is very harmful to society and the nation”.

“In 2008, I performed Chilla (40-day prayer session) and I decided not to shave my beard. When I returned to school the next academic session, the authorities told me I had to shave or I wouldn’t be allowed in school,” Salim told HT. He said principal Teresa Martin served him a notice to collect his transfer certificate if he wasn’t ready to follow the rules. Martin couldn’t be contacted.

Toys from China w orth Rs 5.5 cr seized in city
TNN 23 September 2009, 06:57am IST

CHENNAI: In one of the biggest-ever seizures of toys, Chennai Sea Port Customs seized 45 containers of sub-standard Chinese toys, valued at Rs
5.5 crore, for violation of import rules. Officials also intercepted another 100 consignments of toys for which bills of entry had not been filed by importers for a long time.

Customs Commissioner C Rajan told TOI on Tuesday that the consignments were intercepted over the last 45 days for not conforming to the Standards of Weights and Measures Rules, 1977. The seized commodity did not have mandatory declarations like the name of the manufacturer, name of the commodity, net quantity in terms of standard unit of weights and measures, month and year of packing and the country of manufacture. Also, the imported commodity was not tested and certified by an accredited laboratory, recognised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Import of toys was subjected to tough regulations through a series of circulars issued since December 2008. These regulations were put in place owing to concerns raised by various agencies that sub-standard toys containing toxic material were being imported into the country and sale of cheap imported toys was affecting the domestic cottage industries as well.

Rajan said, “Our officials found that the certificates produced by the importers did not relate to the commodities they had imported. We will register cases against the importers under the Customs Act, 1962, confiscate the commodity and also impose fines on them. There are 25 container freight stations in the city. Almost all of them have huge quantity of toys lying with them.” He said the toys would either be shipped back to the port of origin at the cost of the importer or it would be destroyed. “The importers had also indulged in undervaluation of the commodity. What was declared was only one-third of the actual cost.”

An import agent told TOI, “About 100-odd traders in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad import cheap toys from China through the Chennai port. After Customs officials started tightening the noose, there is a severe scarcity of toys in the market which hikes the price of toys in the market. There are many who change their import export codes often to escape the law. There are a few others who get into the trade without knowing the rules. They get caught when their consignments land at the port.”

Join us, RSS tells Muslims, Christians
Kiran Tare / DNA
Monday, September 21, 2009 12:45 IST

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday appealed to all sections of society, including Muslims and Christians, to join his organisation. "Come, test us, and decide whether you want to continue," he said. "I am sure you will continue because our intention is clear and our behaviour is good."

Bhagwat was speaking at the Dussehra rally of the RSS at the Somaiya grounds near Sion. It was his first public rally after assuming charge as sarsanghachalak in March. "All Muslims in India were Hindus in the past," Bhagwat said.

"They have only changed their way of worship. If they accept this, there will be no clashes. No community in the country is a minority. They have to live and die here. They should accept that we all had the same ancestors and our culture, too, was the same."

The RSS chief attacked Christians for 'forceful' conversions and claimed the problem was growing. "No one can meet god by changing his religion," he said. "Why, then, do they want to convert people?"

Bhagwat said the RSS will use its influence only for the country's benefit. "We will not use our influence for any political party or person," he said. "We are not with any party, but we are with the policies of nationalism."

Kids go to serve sex in Dubai
By: J Dey Date: 2009-09-21 Place: Mumbai

Hundreds of minors flown out to Gulf to dance in bars, provide sex, as Ramzan month of abstinence ends

For three days now, 2,000 girls, almost all minors, have left for the Middle East, particularly Dubai, to feed the needs of a population starved of entertainment and sex post the rigours of Ramzan.

The girls have been told they are being taken to dance in bars, but it is implicit that they will double up as prostitutes for well-paying clients. Another 1,000 will leave by tomorrow.

Sources say there has been an approximate 20 per cent rise in the trafficking of minors over the last year.

And it's remarkably easy. Chennai and New Delhi were used as gateways instead of Mumbai where checks are more stringent.

Traffic Jam: There has been a 20% rise in the trafficking of minors over the last year.

Sources added that all the minors were travelling on forged documents that show them as adults.

A senior officer from Special Branch 1 said the girls were travelling on a tourist visa and their stated purpose was 'to visit relatives in the Gulf'.

"We know they are going for immoral purposes. We have been looking to see how we can check their exit," remarked the officer.

'Rise in trafficking'

Vikrant Raghuvanshi, lawyer and president of the NGO Akshaywat, which works with child trafficking, said, "Yes, there has been a substantial rise in the trafficking of minors, but it was never really controlled.

The government has to take strong initiatives rid the country of this menace."

Gulf Rush: Bar dancers from Mumbai and other parts of central India were sent to the Middle East via Chennai and New Delhi airports instead of Mumbai where checks are more stringent.

In an earlier newspaper report, Subhash Chakma, director of the Asian Centre for Human Rights, had said the government was not serious about checking human trafficking in the country.

"We have enough laws to deal with the problem but lack the will to enforce them."

Ashraf Khan, an agent, said he had been scouting for girls for the past five months. "I make around Rs 40,000 per girl if the deal goes through.

The recruitment process begins about three months before the migration to Gulf begins post Ramzan," said Khan.

In the Gulf, dance bars are shut during Ramzan and the licenses are revoked. All the girls working there are sent home. The exodus to the Gulf therefore begins post Ramzan.

"An average girl gets paid approximately Rs 1 lakh for a three month contract, while an experienced dancer gets around Rs 3 lakh for the same period," he added. In addition, experienced dancers get 50 per cent of the tips.

In Mumbai, possibly the best paymaster, the girls make around Rs 10,000 a month, which explains the Gulf rush.

On contract

Khan admitted that 70 per cent of the girls on the three-month contract are below 18 years and the papers are forged to show them as 21 years and above.

"I am going for the first time. My friends told me that the scene is good in Dubai and I will three times what I would earn in Mumbai," remarked Chandni.

Confirming the exodus, Ramesh Shetty (name changed), a bar owner from Kashimira said, "Five girls from my bar left for Dubai yesterday. We now have a shortfall of dancers, but they have promised to return after three months."

Once there, the girls are completely at the mercy of the operators as their passports are taken away so that they cannot escape.

Rakesh Pandey of Rakesh Tours admitted there had been a significant rise of passengers travelling economy class to New Delhi and Chennai in the past few days, of which a large number were female.

The Other Side

Said DCP Brijesh Singh, "We cannot stop them if they are travelling on proper documents. But I am looking into the matter."

Girl Spotting

> Agents spot the girls at beauty parlors or malls.
> The girls are interviewed and if willing, contracts are signed.
> Rs 30,000, what they would make in a month in the Gulf is paid as advance.
> Most of the girls are 16 and belong to the Bhedia tribe from Rajasthan, famous for their Kalbelia dance.
> The other girls are from Central India and the rest are Mumbai bar girls.

The world's first Islamic search engine
Last updated on: September 8, 2009

Across the world, Muslims can now safely surf the Internet without having to face the embarrassment of bumping into explicit or sexual content.

AZS Media Group, a Dutch company on September 1 launched the world's first Islamic search engine -- www.ImHalal.com -- that differentiates what material is 'halal' (allowed) and what is 'haram' (forbidden) in Islam.

"We got the idea to develop ImHalal.com about nine months ago," says Reza Abdolali Zadeh Sardeha, who is the chief executive officer of www.ImHalal.com and founder of the Amsterdam-based AZS Media Group, in an email interaction with rediff.com.

"In a group of four, we were talking about search engines like Google and that once in a while we accidentally bumped into explicit material. We then brainstormed and about seven months ago, we began the actual development of the search engine. Seven months later the search engine was done," adds 20-year-old Sardeha, an Iranian-Kuwaiti student who was five when his family settled down in The Netherlands.

The advice of Islamic scholars too was taken into account while building the search engine.

This is how the search on www.ImHalal.com works: The search engine only fetches results that are flagged as to be halal.

The search engine uses various techniques to determine which results fetched are supposed to be halal or haram. Once a user comes in contact with content of explicit nature, the search engine will return a negative search advice.

When you look for something through the www.ImHalal.com search engine, you get results like on any other search site. But if your key words are a part of the 'danger list' specified by the developers of www.ImHalal.com , then your search gets a rating of one or two on the 'haram scale'. The message that you see is: 'Oops! Your search inquiry has a Haram level of 2 out of 3. This means that the results fetched by www.ImHalal.com could be haram!'

As a user you can still decide to go through with the risk and click to see the results. Read on. . .

BJP leader quits over call girl racket allegation

Shimla: A senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday resigned from party post after the opposition Congress raked up his alleged involvement in a call girl racket.

The Congress had been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged call girl scandal after chairman of the BJP media advisory committee Rajendra Rana and a senior government functionary were reportedly found with some women in a posh hotel here last week.

"Rana's resignation was accepted this (Wednesday) evening. We are inquiring into the allegations of the Congress. If these are true, nobody would be spared," Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal told IANS.

No first information report (FIR) has been registered so far in the incident.

Come clean on encounters, Supreme Court tells Gujarat

J. Venkatesan
‘Why not agree to SIT probe in Sohrabuddin case?’

New Delhi: With the Gujarat government admitting that Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed in a fake encounter, the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the State to come clean on such incidents by ordering an investigation to go to the root of the matter.

A Bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and Aftab Alam is hearing a petition filed by Rubabuddin for a CBI probe into the encounter death of his brother in the early hours of November 26, 2005 and the subsequent killing of Sohrabuddin’s wife Kausar Bi. The present plea is to refer the incident to the court-appointed Special Investigation Team headed by R.K. Raghavan, who is probing the 2002 Gujarat riot cases.

When senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Gujarat, strongly opposed this plea, saying a charge sheet was already filed in the case, Justice Alam said: “When you [the State] admit that it is a fake encounter, the great concern of the State must also be to go to the bottom of the matter. Why not put such encounter deaths beyond debate? The State should come forward to go beyond all possible debate or controversy. This is no less disturbing. Why don’t you agree to a SIT probe?”

Mr. Rohatgi said conducting further or fresh investigation would prejudice the prosecution case and delay the trial. It would also mean lack of confidence in the trial court, the High Court and the whole judicial system in the State, which would have wide ramifications.

Justice Alam said: “The question of referring the matter to the SIT has arisen as there have been allegations that the investigations by the Gujarat police are just an eyewash and an attempt to cover up the conspiracy in the case. The whole integrity of the investigation has been questioned. Till now, you have not explained how Kausar Bi was killed. Her manner of death is unknown.”

Congress: probe all encounter deaths in Gujarat

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to tread cautiously in defending the Gujarat government against Monday’s disclosure by Ahmedabad metropolitan magistrate S.P. Tamang that the June 2004 “encounter” in which teenager Ishrat Jehan and three others were gunned down was fake.

While Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari described the Narendra Modi regime as a “maneater government” and demanded that all encounter deaths in the State between 2001 and 2009 be looked at afresh, BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu objected to Mr. Modi’s name being dragged in, pointing out that whatever happened in Delhi could not be blamed on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad was silent on the magisterial inquiry report, but he pointed out that it was not proper for a lower court to come out with its report when the Gujarat High Court was seized of the matter and had ordered a special investigation team to look into complaints on the basis of petitions filed by the relatives of those killed.

Mr. Prasad described the “encounter” deaths as “correct, legal, and required encounters.” But he did not explain when journalists asked him what he meant by “required encounters;” instead he read out from the Union Home Ministry’s affidavit, filed in the High Court on August 6, 2009, giving details of intelligence on some of those who were killed and the suspicion that they could be involved with the Pakistan-based terror group, Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Rebutting this argument, the Congress said sharing of intelligence or suspicion could not be stretched to mean that the Centre asked the Gujarat government to kill the suspects without caring about the law.

Mr. Prasad was repeatedly asked whether information of suspicion against anyone justified “fake encounters,” but he parried those questions.

He made the following points: One, the matter is under investigation by the High Court; two, the Centre had intelligence information that some Lashkar modules could be planning attacks against Central and State leaders; three, the Lashkar had activated its Indian modules; and four, Ishrat Jehan and Javed Sheikh, another victim, were part of Lashkar modules.

Mobile threat to honey bees: Researcher get invite from Germany

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A researcher from Kerala, who recently concluded that radiation from mobile towers grievously harmed honey bees, has been
invited to make the key-note presentation at the scientific meet of World Foundation for Natural Science (WFNS) in Germany.

According to Prof Sainuddin Pattazhay, a Reader in Zoology in a college in Kollam district, he has been invited to address the meet focussing on Bees Colony Collapase Disorder (BCCD) reported from different parts of the world.

The conference was scheduled to be held in Ulm, Germany, on November 6 and 8, Pattazhy said.

The study by Pattazhy suggested that honey bees faced a grim threat of extinction for having exposed to mobile phone towers as their radiation was capable of damaging navigational skills of the worker bees which go out and collect nectar from flowers and plants.

The phenomenon could also cause cumulative damage to the environment as a whole since bees help pollination, essential for survival of plants.

According to WFNS, it is a 'worldwide organization dedicated to healing and restoring the world through responsibility and commitment in accord with natural and divine law'.

Ishrat encounter fake: Probe

An inquiry into the Ishrat Jahan encounter case of June 15, 2004 by a city magisterial court has revealed that the four killings were staged by the then Ahmedabad police commissioner KR Kaushik, crime branch chief PP Pandey, DIG DG Vanzara and his men. An inquiry into the Ishrat Jahan encounter case of June 15, 2004 by a city magisterial court has revealed that the four killings were staged by the then Ahmedabad police commissioner KR Kaushik, crime branch chief PP Pandey, DIG DG Vanzara and his men.

The report names 21 cops, including retired DGP Kaushik, as party to the fake encounter.

Just like the Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter, where the couple was abducted and brought to Ahmedabad and Sohrabuddin’s wife Kauserbi killed because she was witness to the murder, the crime branch “kidnapped” Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Shaikh and Ishrat from Mumbai and kept them in illegal custody, the report says.

It claims that IPS officer DG Vanzara’s men killed Javed between 8.30pm and 9pm on June 14, then killed the ‘Pakistanis’ Jisan Johar and Amjadali Rana. Finally, Ishrat was killed that night, between 11pm and midnight, because ‘‘she was witness to the killings’’. Vanzara told the media the next morning that the four were killed after a dramatic police chase around 4.30am on June 15.

Based on food remains in the stomach and the state of the bodies , the inquiry concluded that the deaths occurred several hours before the official claim.

The report says after the three men were killed, Ishrat was forcibly positioned in the front seat of the car and shot from close range. A pistol was then placed in her hand. The police then put her college identity card around her neck and her purse was put in the boot of the car. It also declares that Johar and Rana were Indians.

It says the car was either towed or driven to Kotarpur water works at 4.30am on June 15. The policemen had also dragged Amjad’s body to the divider alongside the car and placed a 9mm gun in his hand.

Bihar, UP witness 68% increase in new passports

Passport in just 15 days

MUMBAI: Tired of the long wait for a passport? It's about to get shorter.

The ministry of external affairs has drafted an ambitious plan to outsource a major portion of the regional passport offices' work so that once a police verification report is received, a passport is issued within three days.

Under the Rs 8-crore 'Passport Service Project', the MEA will have 68 private centres to help RPOs.

"The Union cabinet cleared the proposal for outsourcing passports on September 6. It will operate exactly on the lines of the US visa system. Of the 68 centres, eight will be set up in New Delhi and four in Mumbai," a senior official told TOI.

While existing RPOs would function as usual, the new centres would be entrusted with the entire work, except signing the passport, while the delivery of passports would also be completely outsourced.

Currently, passports are delivered through the postal network or collected in person at the RPO. It is also proposed to link major police stations with RPOs so that police verification reports are delivered quickly. For setting up the 68 centres, tenders will be invited to ensure that the agency provides quality service.

"Our attempt is to cut down the existing waiting period of 45 days to 15-20 days. One-and-a-half months is a very long period, particularly when we claim that we have adequate technical know-how in all the sectors," the official said.

The official said the proposal would take final shape once the minutes of the cabinet meeting were approved. "We expect the final guidelines within a fortnight, and the new project is expected to start functioning within a year or so," he said.

As per the new proposal, if all formalities are completed, new as well as duplicate passports will be issued within three days, while change in name and address will be done on the same day.

Of course, one will have to pay a stiff fee for quick delivery of passports. "Fees will be decided later by the MEA," the official said

Passport officer held in city for taking bribe

CHENNAI: The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday arrested Sumathi Ravichandran, Chennai regional passport
officer (RPO), for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 9,000 from a passport applicant through a tout — a travel agent in T Nagar.

Her husband, R Ravichandran, a health officer in Chennai Corporation, was arrested on Saturday for engaging the touts. Two touts — Fathima Muzaffar, director of Ahmed World Travels and daughter of former IUML MP Abdul Samad, and Raju, owner of Raja Travels in Triplicane — were also arrested. A case was registered under Sec 120B (criminal conspiracy) and Sec 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Sumathi and Fathima were produced before K Naganathan, principal special judge for CBI cases, at his residence on Saturday and remanded in judicial custody. Sumathi told the judge that the case was foisted against her, and requested that she be admitted to a hospital as she was suffering from severe back pain. However, the judge said adequate medical facilities were available at Puzhal prison. Ravichandran and Raju are yet to be remanded. Raju was arrested by the city police last year in a fake passport case.

Following Sumathi's arrest, CBI sleuths raided her residence at Aspiran Garden in Kilpauk and seized Rs 5 lakh cash, documents pertaining to immovable properties worth Rs 1 crore, bank deposit receipts for Rs 4 lakh and documents pertaining to investments in shares, mutual funds and insurance policies in her name and those of her family members. From a locker maintained in a family member's name, officials seized 92 sovereigns of gold jewellery.

Fuel leak behind Riyadh-bound A-I flight fire; passengers safe

Mumbai:04/09/2009 Aviation experts on Friday said that a fuel leak from the wings of an Air India flight caused one of the engines to catch fire.

Engine of AI plane catches fire; passengers safe

Ground staff and emergency personnel of the fire brigade and disaster management teams surround the stranded Boeing 747 aircraft of the state-run national carrier Air India as it stands with its emergency slides deployed on the tramac of the Chattrapati Shivaji International airport in Mumbai on Friday. The engine of an Air India plane caught fire as the jet prepared to take off from Mumbai but all 213 passengers were safely evacuated, a company spokesman said. The passengers, who were heading to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, would travel on an alternate flight, he said, adding that details of the accident were being sought.

Ruling out the possibility of a technical snag leading to the grounding of the aircraft at Mumbai Airport on Friday morning, the experts said the fuel leaked onto the heated engines of the aircraft and that had caused the fire.

Had it not been detected, they said it could have led to a major catastrophe in the air.

Headscarf row: Students told to use dupattas

MANGALORE: Meeting halfway, the management of SVS College, Bantwal, near Mangalore and the family of Aysha Asmin -- the girl who insisted on
wearing a headscarf in class -- arrived at an amicable solution. The college put an end to the issue by introducing uniforms for its students, and granted permission to girls to use the shawl (dupatta) of the uniform as a headscarf.

This decision was taken at a meeting with Mangalore University
vice-chancellor, and was attended by local MLAs, representatives of the college and others, on Thursday night.

The college management was caught in a row over not allowing Aysha Asmin to attend class until she shed her religious identity, a headscarf.

The uniform will be introduced with immediate effect and the process will be completed in a month or two, SVS College correspondent Ganesh Prabhu told TOI. The uniform will be a cream-and-dark brown combination, with a cream-coloured dupatta. Prabhu said the college tailor would give them two uniform samples on Monday. "As we have 500 students, the process will take time,'' he added.

The meeting, held on Thursday under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor Prof Kaveriappa, was attended by Bantwal MLA B Ramanatha Rai, Mangalore MLA U T Khader, registrar Prof K Chinnappa Gowda, correspondent Ganesh Prabhu and principal Seetharama Mayya. Aysha was represented by her relatives, Abdul Salaam Master and Ibrahim.

Girl's family happy

Aysha Asmin's father Mohammed is happy with the decision, but has still not decided which college she would go to. "My daughter is not averse to going to SVS, but her mother is not in favour. The college management called us and said they would be happy to have Aysha in college.''

When told that delaying the decision could cost her a year due to attendance shortage, Mohammed said he would decide on the college in a couple of days.

Kaveriappa said Aysha and her father had not approached him after he gave the assurance that he would help her get a transfer from SVS to any college she chose. "If she has attendance shortage, I cannot help her, I can get her attendance transferred to the new college,'' he said, indicating that they (Aysha's parents) were in a dilemma.

Aysha, though, seems inclined, and said a cream-coloured scarf would be fine. "I don't have issues about the colour as long as I wear a headscarf inside college,'' she said. Aysha has already lost 28 days. She said that by Monday, she will be clear which college she would go to.

Great loss to Muslims, says MIM chief

HYDERABAD: Paying rich tributes to Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Hyderabad MP and MIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said on Thursday that it was for the
first time in the history of Andhra Pradesh that Muslims felt that they had their own man as the head of the government. “Now that he is gone, they are overwhelmed with the feeling of loss,” he told TOI.

Owaisi said he had developed a close rapport with YSR when he was an MLA and Reddy the opposition leader in the assembly. “He was all praise the way I and Numula Narasimha of the CPM used to take on the might of the TDP in the House. That was the beginning of our relationship. The MIM supported the Congress in 2004 and 2009 elections because of the fact that the party believed YSR would keep his word, which he did. He was a friend of the friends,” the MP, who spent over two hours at the Secretariat on Wednesday keeping himself updated with the information on the search operation, said.

Andhra Pradesh CM dead in chopper crash: PMO sources

NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy has died in an air crash, the Prime Minister’s Office said on
Thursday.

The bodies of 60-year-old Reddy, who led his Congress party to a spectacular second consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, and his Special Secretary P Subramanyam, chief security officer A S C Wesley, pilot Group Captain S K Bhatia and co-pilot M S Reddy were found on Rudrakonda Hill, 40 nautical miles east of here, besides the mangled remains of the helicopter.

There was no official confirmation of the deaths, but highly placed Congress sources in Delhi said that the bodies have been found. An official statement is expected shortly.

A scheduled meeting of the Union Cabinet was cancelled following the tragedy.

The helicopter carrying YSR Reddy, two of his staff and two pilots went missing in pouring rain Wednesday morning over the Naxal and tiger-infested Nalamalla forests.

Nearly 24 hours after YSR's chopper went missing, it was located atop Serai Salem hill, at a distance 40 nautical miles (70 kms) east of Kurnool.

The CM left Hyderabad on a six-seater Bell chopper at 8.35am for Chittoor accompanied by his secretary and chief security officer. After 9.27am, radio contact was lost with the helicopter.

Soon after the chopper lost contact, multiple agencies of the state launched a massive hunt for possible wreckage in the desolate terrain. By evening, it expanded into the country's biggest-ever search operation with satellites in the sky joining remote sensing aircraft, fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, troops on the ground and even barefoot deer-hunting tribals with bows and arrows.

Haj quota rules changed In INDIA

NEW DELHI: In order to make the Haj quota allocation process for private tour operators transparent and fair, government has changed rules under
which even operators without any experience would be eligible.

The external affairs ministry has decided to allocate the Haj quota among private tour operators (PTOs) in accordance with the principles of openness, transparency, equity and providing equal opportunity to those PTOs which are "eligible and fulfill the prescribed criterion for being a duly registered as tour operator".

This decision was taken at a meeting chaired by external affairs minister S M Krishna here last week in compliance with the various court cases of 2008 and 2009.

As per the 2009 Haj agreement with Saudi Arabia, Indian Haj pilgrims quota stands at 160,491, out of which 1,15,000 pilgrims are to be sent through the Haj Committee and the remaining 45,491 through PTOs.

Until 2008, Haj quota was distributed among PTOs on the basis of their qualifications and experience. Because of this, no new PTO could qualify for Haj quota owing to their lack of experience and several of them approached the courts.

Since 2008, various court decisions have underlined the need for equitable and fair allocation of Haj quota among all the eligible PTOs including newer applicants.

The meeting held by Krishna decided that if any of the applications of PTOs was not accepted, the objective reasons behind the decision would be clearly spelt out in a transparent manner, a statement by the MEA said.

Raj wary of Uddhav as CM

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, will be facing its first assembly elections not with a positive agenda but a
negative game-plan of ensuring that the Shiv Sena does not come anywhere near power. The Sena has decided that if it and its ally, the BJP, come to power, Uddhav Thackeray will be the chief minister. That is one prospect which his cousin Raj would like to avoid at all cost. The enmity between the two Thackerays is already very intense and expected to grow in bitterness in the run-up to the polls.
